Round 26
Penrith Panthers vs New Zealand Warriors
Stadium: Penrith Stadium, Penrith
Date: Sunday 07 September 2014
Time: 18:30 PM (AEDT)

The regular season wraps up on a high note with Penrith hosting New Zealand in a cracking contest. The Panthers need a win to lock down a top four berth while the Warriors cannot make the eight without a win. What a wonderful way to head into the finals.

Penrith welcome back James Segeyaro at hooker with Kierran Moseley back to the bench. Adam Docker has been replaced in the 17 by Sam Anderson. The Warriors are unchanged with Feleti Mateo touring as 18th man.

Penrith have a very small 17-15-1 edge over New Zealand all-time and won three on the trot over the Warriors until New Zealand won 30-20 in Round 16 this year. Four of the last five matches have tallied 46-plus. Panthers coach Ivan Cleary led the Warriors to the 2011 Grand Final while Panthers Lewis Brown is a former Warriors utility.

Penrith currently sit fourth on the ladder and can secure a Top 4 spot and a second chance with a win on Sunday night. Their +64 differential ranks eighth while they have the sixth rated defence to go with the eighth rated attack. The Panthers have lost their last two – at home to Melbourne and a tough away last-minute defeat to Manly – while they have won five of their last six home matches. Against non-Top 8 company Penrith are 10-4. New Zealand are currently ninth on the ladder and need to win and have results break their way to make it into the finals. The Warriors have a +96 differential, the fourth top attack and the ninth rated defence. They have won just three of their last seven and have won just one of their last four away from Mt Smart and have won just one of their last six against Top 8 opposition.

Home teams favoured by two points or fewer are 41-34 ATS since 2005 with the Panthers 5-0 straight and ATS, last covering against the Knights in Round 1. As a home favourite they are 10-5 (6-9 ATS) since 2012 with a 10-5 under mark. The Warriors are 11-24 (13-22 ATS) over the last three years away while they have not won or covered over the last three years when an outsider of less than four years.

Daly Cherry-Evans hit the nail on the head this week when he declared no team deals with adversity better than his Sea Eagles. Given the news of Glenn Stewart’s departure to South Sydney at the end of the season, you’d expect the Sea Eagles to come out firing at Brookvale Oval and overcome a Raiders team soaring with confidence after their dramatic win against Melbourne.

Manly are again flying under the radar. They are equal top after seven rounds without much fuss and with a number of key players sidelined over that period. Glenn Stewart has finally decided his future and that should steel the tightly-knit Sea Eagles with Canberra in the cross-hairs. The Raiders had a morale-boosting win over the Storm last start and will want to grab some momentum. Good luck. Look for Manly to blow them off Brookie early then ease off the gas. Kieran Foran (knee) is out for Manly with Jamie Lyon stepping into five-eighth.
